Sour Milk

Give me a dirty diaper (or 10) any day... this child smells like sour milk! Thank God he likes to bathe!

I didn't think I would get this look until the teen years

Very concerned about my choice in washcloths

ok, feed me!

The Joy of Breastfeeding

Dear Margaret Belais Salmon (author of The Joy of Breastfeeding),
Please put down your crack pipe before you write your next book.
Sincerely,
Katie Weber

Preparing for Beck's arrival I did a little research on breastfeeding- there's so much information and support for breastfeeding mothers that it appears breastfeeding is pretty hard to do. I even asked my doctor "Is it really that hard? Or is this just women being dramatic?" She told me that yes, it could be really hard and if Beck or I were getting frustrated that it's no big deal to just give up, breastfeeding isn't for everyone.

Whatever.

I had the easiest pregnancy, the easiest delivery, breastfeeding was also going to be easy. The very first time we tried he latched on immediately and went to town.

Women are idiots.

And here's where I'll start eating my humble pie.

BREASTFEEDING IS HARD!

I guess Beck and I had beginner's luck because ever since then we have been breastfeeding impaired. Enter the nipple shield. This little silicone miracle worker is the only reason Beck isn't sucking back the Similac. The only problem is I'll have to start weaning him from it soon so every time I use it I get anxiety that I'm making it one time harder to get him to be satisfied with just me and my girls.

And that's just the beginning. Even if we were successful at the latch-on, being the only person capable of feeding him (well, me and Salma Hayek) is exhausting! We women like to talk about how it's not fair that we have to have periods and children- add breastfeeding to that list too. Which brings me to this. I'm all for God's perfect design and all but I think things would be a lot different had God had a woman do a little proof-reading when he made Adam and Eve. Had I been there I would have a few suggestions....

I would be ecstatic to love any part of my body the way men love their jewels, so why not even out the playing field. No, I'm not suggesting adding anything to my body, but riddle me this Lord, why not give the guys a chance to really bond with their babes? Let women carry the baby for 9 months and then give men the breastfeeding accessories. Or at least give them one. How much easier my life would be if Seth and I could trade off feeding! Yes, I know that's why pumps were invented but I still haven't figured out all the rules and tricks of the trade with my pump. And it actually kinda intimidates me. However, seeing as how Seth probably won't sprout a boob any time soon, I guess I better get to know my Medela Pump In Style.

I hate to sound like I'm complaining, because I love taking care of Beck and I'm happy to feed him whenever he wants (despite what Seth will tell you I act like at 3 AM), I'm just thinking of the what ifs.... because saying "women have the periods, babies and boobs because men just couldn't handle it" only helps so much...

P.S. Dear God, Please don't let me wake up with balls tomorrow.

Since I don't have, nor would share breastfeeding pictures here are some others to enjoy!

The Point Down

My apologies to the makers of Pampers Swaddlers, as it turns out, they hold pee as they promise to do. Apparently, I had been making the rookie mistake of strapping on diapers as fast as possible with no attention to positioning. I did a little research and apparently everyone but me knew about he little boys "point down" rule. After spending the past several days making sure everything was tucked in Southward bound, I'm proud to report Beck and I have both only needed to wear one outfit a day. I'm not so proud to report this has lead to me wearing the same outfit for the past 3 days...

Modeling his diapers and newly umbilical-cordless belly button

In other news, Beck did not have to be hospitalized! His jaundice is clearing up which explains his new little white boy appearance.

We went back to the doctor on Thursday for his 2 week checkup. All was well and there's really nothing exciting to report except our little man now weighs 8 lbs 3 ozs! The doctor was shocked by this big weight gain and even told me to cut back to feeding him every 3 hours instead of every 2 like I had told him I'd been doing. Now here's my question (that I didn't ask him- dumb, I know). I'm not waking Beck up every 2 hours to feed him, he's crying every 2 hours or less and demanding to be fed- what am I supposed to do? Everything I've read says feed newborns on demand and I certainly don't want to make him cry it out for another hour. I don't want him to be obese but I don't want to starve my 2 week old baby. So I've continued feeding him every 2 hours (except for 2 days ago when he slept for 4 hours!! MIRACLES!) Any ideas? If you agree with me, I'd especially like a comment telling me I'm right- I'm going insane and would appreciate the confidence boost.

8lbs or 80 lbs?

And finally, I'm starting a new job when I get back from maternity leave, which means new insurance, which means a new pediatrician. Any suggestions?

Expectations

I had a lot of expectations going into pregnancy about how everything from pregnancy itself to labor and delivery would go. Besides the fact that I expected to have a baby and lo and behold I did, nothing else was how I thought or was told it was going to be. Everyone from friends, family, coworkers and a lady at the post office put in their 2 cents, and everyone from friends, family, coworkers and a lady at the post office were also incorrect in their predictions and expectations. The only person who told me correctly was (surprise, surprise) my doctor. I even took advice from Jan from The Office- she was also wrong and it was only slightly embarrassing when I questioned my nurse and doctor right after delivery and said "Well, on The Office, Jan said..." Anyway, for anyone having a baby anytime soon and have their own expectations, here are my expectations and here is what really happened**.

**Keeping with the tradition of all women, since it happened to me in my pregnancy, it will also happen to you.

Pregnancy

Expectation- I thought it would be easy, I never had morning sickness and always felt pretty good. I was told however, just to wait, eventually I would be miserable.
Reality- It was always easy, besides heartburn and being pretty uncomfortable towards the end, it was not the burden I had envisioned. Do I look forward to doing it again anytime soon? Absolutely not.

Labor
Expectation- From everything I've seen in movies and TV I knew there was going to be a lot of heavy breathing, screaming and Seth in my face telling me how great I was doing. I even told Seth beforehand if he got in my face I would politely (or not so politely) ask him to leave.
Reality- Epidurals (when inserted correctly into your spinal cord, and not your vein- thanks, first weirdo anesthesiologist) are gifts from God. For the most part, sans epidural wearing off (again, thank you first Doc) and blood pressure dropping, labor was a piece of cake. Absolutely no pain, no heavy breathing and Seth at a comfortable distance. We played cards, watched Sports Center (really? on my one day, we're still watching ESPN?) and... actually... I think that's it.

Induction
Expectation- I was induced electively for reasons I'm tired of defending (insert a lady at the post office). In fact, I quit telling people I was being induced because all I heard was negative reactions. I was told labor would be harder, longer and much more painful. My doctor was the only one who told me labor being induced was actually the same as labor started naturally.
Reality- What do you know, my doctor knew what she was talking about! Induction was WONDERFUL. Like I said, labor was easy. It wasn't long by any means- they started the petocin at 7:00 AM, I started feeling uncomfortable contractions around 11:00 and I had a baby at 5:46 PM. And besides the epidural placed incorrectly episode, it wasn't at all painful.

Delivery

Expectation- Pain, tears and poop.
Reality- No pain, no tears and no poop (I think... I'd rather go on blissfully ignorant than to learn otherwise). Delivery was not bad at all, it took a lot of work and I was definitely tired but again, just a lot of pushing, nothing like what I had expected.

Blood
Expectation- I knew I would bleed, I brought along my own .5 cm thick Always Infinity pads.
Reality- I knew I would bleed, I didn't know I would BLEED. Why does no one tell you about this? I thought it would go deliver baby then placenta- not baby, placenta and a 2 liter of blood and golf ball size blood clots. No one told me I'd need to wear 2 economy sized pads at the same time, each an inch thick, and still have to sit on a big sheet because I'd also leak through those. No one told me when getting out of bed I'd probably splatter blood all over the floor. The only thing I was told, was that this bleeding will last for 6 weeks. For those who think one of the great things about pregnancy is you don't have a period- just wait for the 6 week monsoon 9 months later. Give me a period any day.

My baby boy

Expectation- To deliver a cone headed, alien looking boy I would adore.
Reality- I had a BEAUTIFUL, round headed boy who I can not explain how much I love. I never imagined I would love this baby so much- I never imagined this kind of love. He is the love of my life (KFC bowls at a close #2). He is perfect!

I'd like to end the post here on a sweet note but I have one more false expectation.

Pampers Swaddlers
Expectation- To hold pee
Reality- Beck pees through these babies daily. We are constantly changing his pee soaked outfits not to mention my pee soaked outfits. Thanks Beck, because the blood wasn't enough. Any moms have any suggestions?? Is it the diaper? Is it diapering technique?

Sick Boy!

Sorry I've been out of contact with everyone lately, we've been busy adjusting to our little man. We're actually making our 4th trip to the doctor this week- they'll decide today whether Beck needs to be admitted to the hospital overnight. He's jaundice and may need to stay overnight for traetment if his bilirubin count hasn't gone down. It's nothing to worry about too much but I'd still prefer to be home! Pray for us!

P.S. OMG the number of poopy diapers he makes! I literally clean one and 15 minutes later PLLUUHGHPP, there's another. Is this normal???? I guess it doesn't help he's also nursing every 15 minutes, what happened to every 2-3 hours? I need some sleep!
